Hotel Bebej Tradicional

Hotel Bebej Tradicional stands on Rruga Isuf Omari, on the southern side of Gjirokastër — the UNESCO-listed “city of stone” that climbs the slope above the Drino valley. It is a three-star, owner-run hotel rather than a large one, and guests rate it 9.4 “Superb” across 1294 reviews, with staff at 9.8 and value for money at 9.7.

Rooms are air-conditioned and have private bathrooms, refrigerators, flat-screen TVs and balconies looking out over the mountains or the town. Sizes run from 15 m² to 25 m², from compact doubles for two up to a quadruple room and a suite that sleep five, so families and small groups do not have to split up.

The practical side is why many guests choose it: free private parking on site, a free shuttle service, a terrace, a minimarket, daily housekeeping and luggage storage, plus free WiFi throughout. Reception staff speak English and Greek. Payment at the property is cash only.

The hotel's rooms

Hotel Bebej Tradicional has six room types, all air-conditioned, all with a private bathroom and shower, a flat-screen TV and a balcony looking onto the mountains or the town. Sizes run from 15 m² to 25 m². The two compact categories, the 16 m² Deluxe Double Room and the 20 m² Double Room with Balcony, are the choice for couples, while the Deluxe Double Studio adds a desk and a sofa bed. At the top of the range the Deluxe Quadruple Room and the Suite both measure 25 m² and sleep five, the Suite in a separate bedroom. Cots and extra beds are not available, so choose the capacity carefully.

  • 1 Extra-large double bed (Super-king size)
  • Max 2 guests
  • Bathrobes and slippers, safe deposit box, soundproof walls
The most requested category and the only one with its own private entrance and soundproof walls, which makes it the quietest choice in the house. It is compact but well equipped: a seating area with a flat-screen TV, a wardrobe, a safe deposit box, and a private bathroom with shower, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers.

  • 3 Single bed
  • Max 3 guests
  • Sofa, carpeted floor, flat-screen TV

  • 2 Single bed and 1 Extra-large double bed (Super-king size) and 1 Sofa bed
  • Max 5 guests
  • En-suite bathroom, sofa, mountain views
Sleeps the same five as the quadruple, but the beds sit in a proper separate bedroom with its own en-suite bathroom, so the living space stays a living space. Air-conditioned, with a sofa, a flat-screen TV and mountain views — the pick if you want a little privacy inside a family booking.

16 m² · Desk · Max 3 guests

  • 1 Extra-large double bed (Super-king size) and 1 Sofa bed
  • Max 3 guests

The studio is the only category with a proper desk, which makes it the sensible choice if you have work to catch up on between sightseeing days. Same 16 m² footprint as the Deluxe Double Room, but the sofa bed lets it take a third guest, and the seating area is arranged around the flat-screen TV.

Double Room with Balcony — Hotel Bebej Tradicional
Double Room with Balcony
20 m² · Balcony · Max 3 guests

  • 1 Extra-large double bed (Super-king size)

  • Balcony with mountain views, desk, private bathroom
The category named after its balcony, and the one to ask for if sitting outside with a view of the mountains at the end of the day is the point of the trip. At 20 m² it sits between the compact doubles and the family rooms, and it is the only room with a king-size bed rather than a super-king.

Location and what to see

Getting there

Hotel Bebej Tradicional sits on Rruga Isuf Omari, on the southern side of Gjirokastër, below the tangle of cobbled lanes that make up the historic quarter. That position is the practical advantage: it is reachable by car and has free private parking on site, something the old town itself cannot offer, and the hotel runs a free shuttle service. Long-distance buses and furgons stop in the lower town, where the boulevard meets the national road; from there a taxi up costs a few hundred lek and local buses along Bulevardi 18 Shtator are cheaper still. Buses run daily from Tirana in roughly four to four and a half hours, and from Saranda in about an hour and a half. The nearest airport is Ioannina in Greece, around 70 km away and about an hour and a half by road, though most visitors fly into Tirana or Corfu and continue overland. Reception can also sell public transport tickets.

What to see

The old town begins a short walk uphill. The Old Bazaar, laid out more than five centuries ago, is the centre of it: cobbles, stone roofs, silver filigree and qifqi, the local rice balls. Above it Gjirokastër Castle, one of the largest fortresses in the Balkans, holds cannons, a cold-war aircraft and a long view down the Drino valley; it opens daily and takes an hour or two. Two Ottoman tower houses are worth the climb: Skenduli House, early eighteenth century and usually shown by a descendant of the family, and Zekate House of 1811, with twin towers and a lavish upper reception room. The Ethnographic Museum recreates a wealthy nineteenth-century interior. Further afield, the Blue Eye spring is about 36 km away, half an hour or so by car, and best in the early morning before the tour buses. Late spring and September are the kindest months; bring shoes with grip, because the stone lanes are steep and slippery.
